How is Aleppo soap made?
The process of making Aleppo soap has remained unchanged for centuries. The olive oil is heated at a low temperature in a large cauldron for one to three days with water and caustic soda until the caustic soda has dissolved. Laurel oil is then added to the mixture, the content of which may vary from 2-50%. The finished semi-liquid mixture is poured evenly on a floor or a shallow basin, dispersed, and left to solidify overnight. The soap is then cut and stamped and left to air dry in a room or cellar protected from the sun. The whole drying process can take from six months to three years. During the process, the excess water evaporates from the soap (up to 30% of the original weight of the soap), the soap hardens and acquires a golden brown appearance, remaining olive green inside.
How to recognize an authentic Aleppo soap?
Due to its great popularity, imitation of Aleppo soap is widespread, but often uses cheaper palm oil and a synthetic dye. Such copies may not be of the same quality as the authentic Aleppo soap. The authentic Aleppo soap has three characteristics:
1) It is always made in Aleppo, Syria.
2) It is characterized by a rough exterior structure resembling a beige clay block with a slight central depression and an olive-green interior.
3) An Arabic engraved temple on the soap with the name of the factory that made the soap.
